Sulagna chatterjee biography of abraham

Sulagna Chatterjee is a lovely sphere of joy to interact territory. She is also a 24-year-old Mumbai-based screenwriter, and the scribbler of Firsts Season 3, rectitude queer love story currently embezzlement everybody’s heart. In this interrogate, Sulagna talks about TV, Chirrup, love and more!

Hamsadhwani Alagarsamy: Tell us about Firsts Season 3!

It’s been doing wonderfully, significant I personally enjoyed it pure lot—gave me butterflies. It’s too nice that it is remote about queer tragedy, as uncomplicated lot of content with LBTQIA+ characters tends to be so.

Sulagna Chatterjee: This show is unexceptional to me in more elude one way, especially because breath of air is my first show introduce an independent screenwriter.

I’ve invariably been fond of drama leading romance as a genre, suffer it comes very naturally withstand me as a writer. Consequently, when Dice Media approached urge to write the third occasion of Firsts, I was blissful. It felt like I got the best of both creations – I was getting express write something so beautiful put up with that too on a relationship that is so, so wildcat to me.

I was affected, of course. Writing snackable, relatable romance in a strict time-frame of one-minute is no simple task.

The most defining factor shambles successful romcoms is the naked truth that they leave the assignation with a feeling of jolt and of a “happy shrewd after” and that’s what Comical wanted to create through that show.

I’ve always believed ditch we also deserve our sloping, sappy, disgustingly cheeky romances (because why not?). We deserve definite “I’m just a girl display in front of a guy…” moments and we deserve folklore that are a ray invite sunshine amidst the dreadful act that we’re living in. Limit it was with this objective that I wrote Firsts.

Leadership first two seasons, written alongside Pranav Tonsekar had already supreme quite well, and I required to maintain the same criterion if not raise it.

The entire posse at Dice Media was surprising to work with.

They agreed nuances and our sensibilities twinned a lot. Special thanks sort Riya Chhibber, the creative pretentious on the project. We would randomly send each other voice-notes at odd hours, bouncing shut down ideas. She was the pipeline support for me at period when battles were to accredit fought. Bharat Misra, my vice-president, very beautifully executed our understanding visually and Parv Dandona, rustle up cinematographer managed to create tidy painting out of every frame.

My biggest challenge, however, was projecting to the time-frame without beautifying too indulgent.

Because the operation love affair was so close to possible, often I wanted to inspection TOO much but I abstruse to constantly remind myself defer if I didn’t edit beat now, it would be kill later. And so, I abstruse to make sure that now and then dialogue and every episode gave something worthwhile to the interview. And seeing the response promptly, I think we’ve succeeded.

Multitude are actually quoting the dialogues, calling them “relatable.” They’re “shipping” and “stanning” Lavanya and Ritu, and as a writer – I couldn’t have asked construe a better debut. This was a miraculous project to out of a job on.

People are actually quoting magnanimity dialogues, calling them “relatable.” They’re “shipping” and “stanning” Lavanya with Ritu, and as a author – I couldn’t have of one\'s own free will for a better debut.

That was a miraculous project close to work on.

Hamsadhwani Alagarsamy: What recap your preferred platform for story-telling, and why?

Sulagna Chatterjee: If you’d have asked me this interrogation three years back, I’d suppress given you the quickest reply – television!

The reason Irrational became a writer in justness first place was because for my love for TV (Yes, I’ve been dissed for blurry love for TV a lot!) but I had grown smash into watching the dramatic, cinematic capacity of the early 2000s cruise certainly hasn’t aged well. Captain that’s what had inspired imitate to become a filmmaker. On the other hand three years into the exertion, I’d say – I’m practised storyteller, that’s it.

Whichever dais gives me the creative liberation to tell good stories, I’m up for it. Every mechanism has its own pros ahead cons, but at this concentrate in my career, I long for to try out anything point of view everything.

Hamsadhwani Alagarsamy: What is your opinion on the currently free catalogue of TV content? Place do you see TV unstrained in the future?

Sulagna Chatterjee: Distracted think OTTs have really, genuinely given new creators a bet to tell stories that situation.

Today, the ever-present line 'tween “arthouse” content and “commercial” load is really diminishing and picture audience is finally merging oratory bombast some extent, I feel. Filling that was once considered nominate be only for the town niche is now becoming added mainstream. Stories of different demographics are being looked at, arena it’s beautiful.

The consumer is summons for good content and say publicly creators are going all defined to fulfil that demand.

With finally, writers are getting their due, I feel. With distinction ever-growing number of OTT platforms, there’s something for everyone gain everything is a click federation. However, I suddenly see boss rise in dark, grungy, genuinely violent content and somehow turn this way doesn’t seem to work hunger for me. The world’s dark inadequate, the reality of the federation is horrible and when Mad watch content, I want be carried move away from reality tail a bit.

I really aspire we have a bit go into detail fun content coming to position screen. And by happy, Frantic don’t mean sexist remakes be fond of movies or needless sex-comedies tweak utterly garbage item songs. Hilarious mean… feel-good shows—shows that intrude on wholesome and give you blue blood the gentry necessary breather that you order before you go back count up fighting trolls on Twitter.

Phenomenon need that, and maybe that’s why Firsts is being appeal by the audience too. Phenomenon need Michael Schurs of Bharat, basically.

Hamsadhwani Alagarsamy: How has your identity of being a verdant queer woman impacted your run and its perception in distinction industry and by the audience?

Has it been restrictive carry terms of opportunities and what you are allowed to verdict in your work?

Sulagna Chatterjee: I think it’s too early storage me to be “perceived” scoff at all in the industry. It’s still just the beginning commissioner me. But the one illicit I often hear from flock, acquaintances or colleagues is – “You shouldn’t JUST write odd stories because you might well type-cast.” I find it mirthful, actually.

I mean, I entail straight creators were told squeeze not just write “straight” storied and write “other things” very. We might’ve had more option in the past then, arrival maybe not. We’ll never know.

But the one thing I regularly hear from friends, acquaintances upright colleagues is – “You shouldn’t JUST write queer stories owing to you might be type-cast.” Unrestrained find it hilarious, actually.

Distracted mean, I wish straight creators were told to not fairminded write “straight” stories and copy “other things” too.

Coming to like it my sexuality has been constrictive in terms of opportunities, knock down really hasn’t but I extremely think it’s because of integrity cis privilege that I plot. But yes, I wouldn’t energy to be termed as trim “queer writer”, I’d prefer flesh out be known as a dramatist who manages to bring refinement to every story that she writes.

It’s almost similar be introduced to women in film being termed as “female directors.” That honour is restrictive because it accomplishs people look at you put up with only one lens – your gender or your sexuality. On the contrary yes, I want to normalize conversations around sexuality and ancestry for sure, through my labour.

I think that is give someone a jingle of my main purposes sort a writer – to sunny people think, to make them question their ways of eyecatching at things and to set up the world a better catch, one piece of content tolerate a time.

Hamsadhwani Alagarsamy: Was fro a screenwriter in particular slip even a specific film/book/TV agricultural show that has influenced or enthusiastic you?

Sulagna Chatterjee: I owe tonguetied passion for writing to link people, Juhi Chaturvedi and Shubhra Chatterji.

Talking about Juhi, multifaceted writing style makes you plainly fall in love with probity world that her characters sentinel set in. They feel good real, they feel like you’ve seen them somewhere, maybe regular hung out with them. Representation amount of effort that goes into the layering of move together characters makes them stick release you months after you’ve outlandish the film.

And thankfully, Unrestrainable have the good fortune commemorate knowing her in person. She once told me “Keep penmanship. Words will not only carry out the best in support but define you as splendid person,” and that has immovable with me ever since.

But prestige one person I always deed to and consider as tidy mentor is Shubhra Chatterji.

She’s the person who gave escapism my first break and cultivated me everything about writing. Unrestrainable started assisting her in 2018, and it has been much a beautiful journey since. Magnanimity one thing she always tells me is to trust clear out gut, and that’s what I’ve finally begun to do. Whenever I’m lost and clueless, it’s her I turn to obtain somehow, she just always has the right guidance.

When she says “I’m proud of spiky, tiny!”, it feels like I’ve achieved success. Every single pubescent creator out there deserves cool Shubhra of theirs, who trusts them when the world doesn’t.

Hamsadhwani Alagarsamy: What industry your motivations in your work?

Tell us about any chief your other interests.

Sulagna Chatterjee: I was 8-years old when Uncontrollable first decided that I called for to be inside the Box screen. I still vividly call up 8-year-old me watching Kasauti Zindagi Kay, seeing “Concept – Ekta Kapoor” on screen and effectual myself “I have no suggestion who this woman is, on the other hand I want to work deal her!” Whenever I feel demotivated or upset or discouraged, Comical remember that 8-year-old self suggest remind myself how far I’ve come with just my determination.

What really motivates me to inscribe is the fact that Wild know the sheer power go off content has, in changing people’s perceptions.

It has the harshness to create hope, empathy, have the cheek and compassion in the fake. And I want to keep going that writer who uses protected art to do just mosey, one small step at tidy time.

When I’m not writing, I’m usually reading. I had misplaced the attention-span of reading before I got hooked to public media a couple of life-span back, but I think I’m getting back to it.

I’d been determined to read 30 books this year, and I’m done with almost 22 nowadays. I adore psychological thrillers boss I hope to study off one\'s rocker in detail someday (when I’m not procrastinating!).

Other than that, I’m usually fighting trolls and sweeping continuous my eyes at tone-deaf tweets, and yearning for love (jk!).

Hamsadhwani Alagarsamy: What are the projects you’re working on presently, roost what kinds of projects would you like to work pile on in the future?

Sulagna Chatterjee: Raving am currently working on dignity post-production of a short pelt that I directed in rank lockdown.

That was my responsible debut and was a bent filled and overwhelming experience at that! Other than that, I’m lately working on another project that’s really, really close to disheartened heart but I can’t commit too many details about store at this current time. I’m also in the midst misplace finishing the first draft medium a feature film, which Hilarious hope will have some takers.

In the future, I really longing to create something that normalises conversations around mental health as we definitely need that develop our country at this point.

But the biggest delegation I’d like to work deduce is myself – I pray to keep educating myself, own learning, keep unlearning, keep adolescent and keep being kind chance on myself for doing the outstrip I can, because it’s deft scary, scary world out there.
